Charles was born on January 31, 1941, in Bainbridge, Georgia, the son of the late Frederick H. and Lessie Smith Sims. A graduate of Bainbridge High School, he was an Eagle Scout. He continued his education at The Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering. Early in his career, Charles worked at the Decatur County Chamber of Commerce for over ten years. He earned his pilot's license and enjoyed many flights in small planes. In 1997, Charles relocated to Middle Georgia after accepting a position with the Peach County Development Authority as Executive Director. He was a member of Byron United Methodist Church. Before retirement, he was active in the Kiwanis Club and the Rotary Club. Charles retired after eighteen years of service with PCDA. Through the years, he became a genealogy buff and spent a great deal of time researching and recording his family's history. But his greatest passion in life was his family, whom he loved completely and with whom he spent as much time as possible, especially after the grandchildren started coming along. Charles will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sue Sims Hollis; and a daughter, Claire Sims Wright.Left to cherish the memories they made with Charles are his loving and devoted wife of nearly twenty-one years, Merium Sims of Byron; his children, Candice Sims Pruett of Augusta, Lisa Giles (Malcolm) of Fort Valley, and Brad Lawhorn of Butler; his grandchildren, Morgan Smith (Truitt), Kylie Pruett, Harbor Wells, Anna Claire Pruett, Nick Lawhorn, Anne Marie Lawhorn, and Allie Albritton (Kaleb); a sister, Jenny Sims Herring (Bill); a devoted and thoughtful caregiver, Shae Butts; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
