Eugene was born October 10, 1960, in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Elton & Pauline Spooner Smith. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 1978, and earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Southern Polytechnic State University. Eugene was a member of First Baptist Church.
Eugene was a quiet, meticulous man who believed there was a right way to do just about everything—and he was determined to do it that way. He could repair nearly anything and was never afraid to figure out how something worked. He had an incredible memory for dates and times, making him the family historian and the one people could count on to remember the details.
Eugene loved being outdoors and had a special place in his heart for animals, especially cats. He also had a knack for tying knots and rarely went anywhere without a piece of rope handy. Even during his chemotherapy treatments, he took his rope along and passed the time practicing his knots. In his own quiet way, Eugene made his mark on the people around him and will be remembered for the things he knew, the things he could fix, and the many little details that made him uniquely Eugene.
Survivors include his sisters, Marie Donalson, Martha Ashley (Larry), and Joann Perry; his nieces & nephews, Brian & Jamye, Lisa & Jon, Dan & Amanda, Stacy & Misty, and Dean & Samantha; his great-nieces & nephews, Wyatt, Bratcher, Alice, Edison, Sadie, Aubrey, Kell, Sadie Marie, Tyler, Tucker, Peyton, Carlie, and Clay; and his beloved cats, Casper & Boo. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents.
