George L. Lanier, age 92, went home to be with the Lord on October 30, 2025.
George Lawrence Lanier was born on April 4, 1933, to John Roy and Lottie Nola Harper Lanier in Taylorsville, Georgia. He lived his early life in and around Taylorsville and attended high school there. George left school the day after his 18th birthday to enlist in the United States Army. He served honorably as a forward observer during the Korean War. As Sergeant he earned the following medals: Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Maritime Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and 3 Bronze Stars. Near the end of his service, he married his hometown sweetheart, Iva Ruth Waters. During their 60 years of marriage, they raised three sons in Rockmart where George worked in various jobs. They later moved to Bartow County when he became the manager of Glenn Taylor Farms in Cartersville. George worked there until his retirement and beyond - as he wasn't very good at retiring. George and Ruth enjoyed traveling with friends and family and especially enjoyed spending time in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. They made many overnight trips just to ride and see the countryside. George was a member of Taylorsville Baptist Church.
George is survived by his son, Hugh Lanier (Susan) of Bainbridge; his grandchildren, David Lanier (Holly), Brad Lanier (April), Melissa Lanier, and Jay Lanier; his great-grandchildren, Caroline Lanier, Ansley Lanier, Dawson Scoggins, Hayden Siniard and Hunter Siniard; his daughter-in-law, Tina Lanier; his sisters, Betty Tatum and Mary Moore; and his brother, Sidney Lanier. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; his sons, Harold Lanier and Hoyt Lanier; his granddaughter, Katie Lanier; his sisters Barbara Smith and Forrest Willis; and his brothers William (Buddy) Lanier, John Curtis Lanier, Sr., and James (Red) Lanier.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 4:00 pm at Taylorsville Cemetery with Rev. Rusty Lanier officiating and military rites provided by American Legion Brown-Wright Post #12 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2:00 pm until 3:30 pm at Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will include Hugh Lanier, David Lanier, Brad Lanier, Jay Lanier, and Ricky Cole.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Pop's family and friends at Magnolia Place Bainbridge, his wonderful caregivers with Kaye's Caring Hands, and the staff of Georgia Hospice for the loving care they provided.
