Jerry Hatton

Jerry Hatton, 84, of Decatur, IL, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2026.

Born to Henry Alvin & Mamie Curry Hatton, Jerry was raised in Illinois and grew up in a family deeply rooted in the world of midget car racing. The roar of engines and the camaraderie of the track were part of his earliest memories, shaping a lifelong passion for the sport. Though life led him down different paths, that passion never faded. Later in life, he fulfilled a personal dream by acquiring a midget race car of his own, returning to the track not just as a fan, but as a proud owner.

He found great joy in sharing this passion with his family. One of his proudest moments was watching Scott take the wheel when he came of age, continuing a cherished family tradition. As a race car owner, Jerry experienced notable success, including a memorable championship season that stood as a testament to his dedication, knowledge, and love of the sport.

Jerry was a loyal and enthusiastic fan of University of Illinois athletics, rarely missing a football or basketball game. Whether celebrating victories or enduring tough seasons, his support never wavered. Beyond the field, the court, and the track, Jerry placed family above all else, creating a legacy of love, support, and togetherness that will celebrated through generations.

Survivors include his wife, Judith Franklin Hatton; his children, Scott Hatton (Janeen) and Shanell Schuyler (Sean); his step-children, JuDean Howerton, Tony Franklin, and Dean Franklin; his grandchildren, Clarissa, Maddisson, Montanna, Alaiya, and Viviana; his sister, Donna Dickson; and a host of extended family. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his siblings, Henry Alvin Hatton, Jr., Myra Veraldi, and Myrna Barber.

A memorial service will be held in Decatur, IL at a later date. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.bryantfuneralga.com. Memorial donations may be made to Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306. https://t2t.org/donate/
