Joseph Hansel Mitchell was born February 6, 1938, in Donalsonville, GA, the son of James & Naomi Carter Mitchell. He was a graduate of Climax High School. Joseph attended Norman College and later earned a bachelor's degree from Mercer University. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a B-52 navigator earning the rank of Captain. After his military career, Joseph brought that same dedication to his work in real estate, where his honesty and care earned the trust of colleagues and clients at Rogers Realty.

A lifelong learner, Joseph had a deep love of philosophy and mathematics. He could often be found with a book in hand, pondering life's big questions or joyfully working through a complex equation just for the challenge of it. His curiosity never faded, and he delighted in conversation that made him think more deeply.

Joseph treasured time with his family. Gatherings usually involved food, sharing stories, and passing along wisdom to the younger generations. Quiet moments allowed Joseph to reflect on the fullness of life and the grace required to live it.

Survivors include his children, John Mitchell (Angelia), Randy Mitchell (Christine), James Wilder (Cindy), Gary Wilder (Reneé) Phillip Wilder (Anita), Michelle Wilder (Bryan), and Denise Wilder; his grandchildren, John Mitchell, Jr., Zane Bryant Mitchell, Kimberly Mitchell, Bryce Wilder, Mary Claire Wilder, Morgan Wilder, and Lyndsey Wilder; his brothers, Ed Mitchell and Harold Mitchell (Gloria); and a host of extended family. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his wives, Dollie Bryant Mitchell and Frances Elkins Mitchell; and his siblings, James P. Mitchell, Earl Mitchell, Edna Jackson, Edith Storey, and Annie Mitchell.
