Renate Volz Smith

Renate Volz Smith, 73, of Brinson, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2026.

Renate was a native of Germany who made her home in the United States for the past 55 years. A Catholic by faith, she carried her beliefs with her throughout life and built a life filled with family, good books, and plenty of adventures.

She enjoyed fishing along the creek and traveling, especially back to Germany to visit the place where her story began. Reading was a favorite pastime, and she collected so many books that she could rightfully consider her collection a library.

The grandchildren kept Renate busy. She loved to be included in whatever they were up to. Photography became a fun way to capture and share the moments she treasured in her heart.

Survivors include her son, Steve Smith; her grandchildren, Alexis & Alaina; her great-grandchildren, River & Chloe; and her beloved dogs, Sally & Frodo. Renate was preceded in death by her parents, Erich & Josefine Geldon Volz.
