Richard Samuel Smith was born June 1, 1981, in Bainbridge, the son of Richard & Bonnie Hayes Smith. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 1999, and earned a certificate in Industrial Maintenance from Bainbridge College. Sammy farmed on the Smith Family farm for most of his life and most recently worked at Mitchell County Farm Services. He was a member of Delwood Baptist Church.
Sammy never met a stranger. Whether you knew him for five minutes or forty years, he had a way of making you feel like an old friend. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and before long he’d have everyone laughing with one of his jokes or stories. Making people smile came naturally to him, and he loved nothing more than seeing others happy. His generous heart matched his personality; he would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.
Sammy loved the outdoors and the simple joys of country life. Fishing and hunting were favorite pastimes, and he became an expert at noodling. Oysters were always in season for Sammy.
Farming was never just a job for Sammy but told the story of who he was at the core. One of Sammy’s proudest accomplishments was helping others find success in the life he loved so much. He leaves behind countless memories, laughter that will echo for years to come, and a legacy of kindness, hard work, and friendship that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Cathy Summerhill Smith; his children, Morris & Ellie Smith; his mother, Bonnie Hayes Smith; his brother, Clay Smith and his wife, Kasey; his loyal canine companion, Daisy; and a host of extended family. Sammy was preceded in death by his father, Richard Charles Smith.
